Who doesn’t love Pandas? Sadly, Giant Pandas have long been under the threat of extinction. However, things are looking up as the International Union for Conservation of Nature announced that the Giant Panda was no longer on the endangered list.
“Evidence from a series of range-wide national surveys indicate that the previous population decline has been arrested, and the population has started to increase,” said the IUCN’s updated report.
Thanks to the persistent efforts of the Chinese Government, the official status of the lovable Panda has changed from ‘endangered’ to ‘vulnerable’ due to a population increase. However, the IUCN warns that this rebound could be temporary as climate change is predicted to wipe out more than 33% of the panda’s bamboo habitat in the next 80 years. It added: “To protect this iconic species, it is critical that the effective forest protection measures are continued and that emerging threats are addressed.”
Climate change is real. The sooner we start acting, the better our chance in fighting it.
